Shared View is the second in a series of home-based traveling exhibitions conceived by COLLECTIVE_VIEW in response to New York’s social distancing measures. Building upon the themes of intimacy and community that guided our first iteration (Private View, August 3 - November 6, 2020), Shared View will take place over seven weeks in the homes of its seven participating artists. Each week, the artwork of one featured artist will be installed concurrently in all seven homes. The seven artworks may be multiples, a series, or a selection from the oeuvre of the artist. With each successive week, another artist’s collection of seven artworks will be presented.

The elements of surprise and chance play a central role in Shared View as the artworks included are only unveiled week by week. Our specific structure and parameters prescribe that each artwork be no more than 11 x 14 inches and that no work be viewed before its assigned debut. Implementing this logistical framework, we play with the concept of chance as investigated by John Cage─we remove the element of subjectivity in the initial curatorial conceit and the exhibition expands in a disciplined manner.

How many permutations, meanings, or contradictions will be uncovered between the 49 works in Shared View? How might the relationships between artists in the collective deepen?

Each week, as an additional seven works by a single artist are revealed, themes and conceptual connections will unfold. These revelations will occur not only in each individual home, but also between the seven homes as each artist shares their particular view on Instagram. We also expect to find resonances and unanticipated relationships between the artworks in Shared View and those already in our personal collections. Integrating these artworks into our personal spaces

and experiencing them in relation to our household objects, domestic decor, and general concept of home, will promote further interpretations of the works.

Within each home, participating artists take on the role of curator and install their growing exhibitions. The public is given access to the exhibitions through the @_collectiveview_ Instagram as each week one artist is highlighted, and on regularly assigned days each week, artists share their home installations. The artworks will also be reposted and shared among the Instagram accounts of its participating artists, curators-at-large, and other members of Collective_View. Consequently, these shared views will reach into the public sphere and perhaps help allay our re-entry anxiety as the parameters for social distancing and gathering in groups begin to dissipate.

During these seven weeks the artists and curators-at-large will offer a series of talks via @_collectiveview_ Instagram Live on Wednesdays from 6-6:30pm. In addition, each artist will take over the @_collectiveview_ instagram for the duration of the week in which their work is featured. They will share musings, information about their practice, or general views into their everyday lives.

Shared View is the second cumulatively created, home-based exhibition instigated by Collective_View. It presents artworks by members of our collective, in addition to select invited guests, and welcomes the public to view these intimate experiences through social media. Our inaugural exhibition, Private View, travelled between the homes of seven artists and three curators from August 3 - November 6, 2020. The following spring, it became Private View IRL and took the form of a three-day pop-up show at Paradice Palase from March 5 - 7, 2021. Collective_View continues to imagine alternative ways of gathering people and artworks for both intimate and public art experiences.
